Bolivia's President called on to decide the question of U.S. bases in Colombia in South America
Bolivian President Evo Morales proposed a question of establishing U.S. military bases in Colombia to the continent-wide referendum. According to his idea, a referendum must involve people of all countries in South America. Morales said that would make such a proposal at a meeting of the Union of South American nations, which will be held on Friday in the Argentine Bariloche, transfers Infox.ru with reference to the agency AP.
Earlier reported that the Colombian Government decided to transfer seven military bases for use by the U.S. Army. The agreement is designed for 10 years, and then the base and infrastructure, which undertake to construct the Americans should withdraw Colombia.
If the Colombian president wants to convey this framework, I wish to hold a referendum in South America that the people of Bolivia , Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina – all countries can meet, – said Morales. Earlier, he called the establishment of U.S. bases in Colombia provocation from Washington, which in his opinion, wants to ignite the conflict and stop the integration processes in the region.
previously condemned the establishment of bases almost all governments in South America, especially vehemently criticized this agreement, Venezuela and Ecuador. Two days ago, Ecuador's parliament adopted a resolution which stated that the establishment of bases to threaten peace in the region. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez also says that the base are a threat to regional stability and could provoke a military conflict. Yesterday he said he was willing sever diplomatic relations from Bogota. Chavez has even promised to buy Russia's hundreds of tanks to protect against alleged U.S. aggression.
Meanwhile, U.S. authorities say that the military presence is necessary only to combat drug trafficking and Colombian rebels.
In Wednesday, Ambassador of Colombia to the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Alfonso Hovos said in an address to the world that Chavez is interfering in the internal affairs of Colombia, which is contrary to the principles of the OAS. Colombian authorities have also refuted allegations that the agreement on the bases is a threat to neighboring countries.
U.S. diplomat Christopher Makmullen said that the agreement is transparent and based on the fact that the U.S. respect the territorial integrity of other states and would not interfere in their internal affairs. We do not believe that a responsible leader is entitled to claim certain winds of war, as did President Hugo Chavez, because such statements do not provide reasons for the emergence of the world – said Makmullen.
